The University of Regina's women's soccer team beat the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Grace Miller scored her first two career Canada West goals to lead the way for the Cougars. Keeper
Allyson Ford made a key save on a penalty shot to secure the fifth victory of the season for Regina.
Â
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with both teams trading chances. Regina had a lot of opportunities come up empty as they were called for five offsides in the first. The Cougars ended the half with an 8-7 shot advantage.
Â
"In the first half we were flat," said Cougars interim co-head coach
Rob McCaffrey. "We had a chance to get into our position groups and reiterate the focal points and came together as a group. We just needed to refocus and get back to our principles and check our energy. We started to apply ourselves and do the little things better. We started to connect our passes and looked forward more than the first half."
Â
In the second half, the Cougars showed more energy. Halftime sub
Taylor Bubnick dribbled the ball around the box before sending a shot towards the net. Wesmen keeper Taryn Raabe made the initial save but
Grace Miller cleaned up the rebound for her first goal of the season. Late in the second half, the Wesmen were called for a foul in their box following a Cougars corner kick.
Grace Miller was given the opportunity and put home the penalty shot just under the sprawling Raabe. Winnipeg had an opportunity on a penalty shot but
Allyson Ford guessed correctly to make a great save. During added time, Winnipeg's Enya Bukvic scored her first goal of the season on a broken play by the Cougars. She ran into the box unguarded and put a chip shot over Ford to take away the clean sheet.
Â
"Need to be more proactive tomorrow and play with a bit more urgency but we are looking forward to tomorrow to raise the bar and push forward."
Â
Allyson Ford made seven saves between the pipes for the Cougars to earn the win. Wesmen keeper Taryn Raabe also made seven saves to take the loss.
The two teams will face each other again, tomorrow, at noon (11 AM Sask) in Winnipeg.
