The University of Regina's women's soccer team defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Captains
Allyson Schneider and
Taylor Bubnick scored second half goals for the Cougars as they clinched the second seed in the East Division and a playoff berth with the win.
Â
"Our performance on Friday gave us so many positives to build off of and focus on and it was amazing to see the players come out and execute our style of play at such a high standard today," said Cougars interim co-head coach
Astrid Baecker. "After Friday's game we reminded our players that you are NOT defeated when you lose. You are defeated when you quit. Our performance today was a true example of the "no quit" mindset that this team has. Today was a total team win, we traveled with our entire team today because the strength of our family is an important part of our culture and identity."

The Huskies brought the pressure in the first half, generating five corner kicks in the first 20 minutes of the game. On the fifth corner, Saskatchewan forward Hailey Weber scored her first goal of the season by floating a rebound over Regina keeper
Allyson Ford. The Cougars settled down after the goal by holding the Huskies to only one more corner in the first.
Â
Early in the second half, the Cougars generated a corner kick opportunity. Bubnick sent the ball into the box and Schneider corralled the ball and sent it into the back of the net to make it a 1-1 game. Regina understood that they need a win to reach playoffs because a tie would give Manitoba the second seed due to tie breakers. In the 79
th minute, Bubnick stole a pass deep in Huskie territory and launched a bullet into the left side of the net that stood as the game winner.
Â
"The heart of our team is in our midfield and today we won with our heart. It was very rewarding to see our midfielders have such an impact in today's game and be able to get the ball in the back of the net with both captains scoring goals!"
"It's an amazing moment," said Cougars midfielder
Taylor Bubnick on her goal. "It's amazing to do this as a team. We came out in the second half and we were all together. We were all on the same page. We had our goal and we came out and executed, and I think that's awesome."
Ford recorded seven saves between the pipes for the Cougars to earn the victory. Huskies goalie Jadyn Steinhauer also made seven saves in the loss.
Â
The Cougars will travel to British Columbia to face the UBC Thunderbirds in the Canada West Quarter Finals on Friday. The Huskies will host their own Quarter Finals game next week against the University of Calgary Dinos.
