Madison Willan's goal in the second overtime gave the Alberta Pandas a 2-1 win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in a Canada West game at The Co-operators Centre.
The Cougars' lone goal came from
Lilla Carpenter-Boesch, which stood up as the game's lone marker until with just under two minutes remaining when Alberta's Allison Reich tied it up on the power play.
Halle Oswald made 21 saves to secure the win for the Pandas, who are now 1-0-2-0 and have collected seven of a possible nine points through their first three conference games.
Regina (1-3-0-1) was backstopped by rookie
Arden Kliewer, who made 31 saves between the pipes for the Cougars.
After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, the Cougars' power play struck on a beautiful play that saw
Ireland Sorestad deliver a sweet cross-ice feed to Carpenter-Boesch for the veteran's first goal of the season.
It looked like Carpenter-Boesch's goal might just be enough, but Alberta replied with a power play goal of its own after the Cougars were whistled for a roughing minor with two minutes to go. Just eight seconds into the advantage, Reich fired a wrist shot through traffic which beat Kliewer and sent the game into extra sessions.
The first overtime solved nothing at 4-on-4, but Alberta came up with the game-winning goal during the 3-on-3 period. Kliewer made a fine save on a Danica Namaka breakaway, but shortly after that Willan weaved her way through the slot and scored on the backhand to give the Pandas their third win in as many tries this year.
The two teams will finish up their weekend series with a Saturday afternoon contest at The Co-operators Centre. Game time is set for 3:00.
NOTES: Alberta finished with a 33-22 advantage in shots on goal ... the penalty situation was relatively even as the Pandas finished 1-for-5 on the power play and Regina was 1-for-4.
