Payton Laumbach's goal gave Alberta a 3-2 win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday afternoon in Canada West women's hockey action at The Co-operators Centre.
It was Alberta's second double-overtime victory over the Cougars in as many days, as Friday also saw the two teams go to a second extra session before the Pandas came away with the game-clinching goal.
Brooklyn Tews and Kallie Clouston also scored for Alberta, which has now gone to overtime in all four of their Canada West games. Kirsten Chamberlin made 22 saves between the pipes for the Pandas.
Lilla Carpenter-Boesch and
Jordan Kulbida had Regina's goals.
The Cougars opened the scoring just two minutes in when Carpenter-Boesch's shot from near the left hash marks fooled Chamberlin for the veteran's second goal of the weekend.
Tews tied it up five minutes later with a shot from the point through traffic, and Alberta took the lead five minutes into the middle stanza thanks to Clouston's first goal of the campaign.
The Cougars tied it up on the power play six minutes into the third, when
Jordan Kulbida teed up a one-timer off a feed from
Megan Long – the rookie's third assist of the season – that beat Chamberlin.
The overtime winner came after a Regina change resulted in a 2-on-1 for the Pandas. Danica Namaka slid a pass over to Laumbach, who hit a nearly wide-open net for her first goal of the season.
The Cougars fall to 1-3-0-2 with the setback and will now prepare for a pair of away games at Manitoba. Their next home games aren't for three weeks when the Cougars play host to Trinity Western in what will be the first ever matchups between the two teams.
Alberta (0-0-3-1) will host provincial rival Calgary next Friday and Saturday at Clare Drake Arena.
