The University of Regina's women's basketball team lost to the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 88-82 on Friday night.
Kyanna Giles scored 26 points and dished out six assists for the Wesmen to lead them to the victory. First-year wing
Jade Belmore recorded a double-double, scoring a team-high 23 points and nabbing 10 rebounds for the Cougars.
"At times we followed the game plan, but we turned it over too much which we knew was going to be a problem if we did that," said Cougars head coach
Dave Taylor. "They're number one in Canada West and the country probably for a reason, we just gave up a couple of runs against them and you can't do that. You almost have to play flawless against them and we will try again tomorrow. Hopefully we can clean up some stuff."
The Cougars came out of the gate shooting well, hitting 5-of-11 three pointers in the first quarter. The Cougars shared the ball around with four different players scoring five or more points in the opening frame. They led 29-22 after one.
The second quarter was a different story, however, with the Wesmen scoring 29 points of their own while holding the Cougars to just 13 points. Giles and Robyn Boulanger each scored nine points to take the lead back from the Cougars and go into halftime up 51-42.
The third quarter was a back and forth affair with both teams tightening up the defense. Regina scored 19 points while Winnipeg scored 17. Wesmen center Keylyn Filewich went 4-for-4 on field goals to record eight points in the frame. Fourth-year guard
Kaitlyn Tonita drained back-to-back threes for the Cougars to close the gap to 68-61 after three.
In the fourth quarter, with 6:37 remaining in the game, Filewich hit a layup to give the Wesmen their biggest lead of the night at 14 points. The Cougars fought back, closing the gap to just six points but ultimately running out of time.
Filewich scored 20 points and added nine boards for the Wesmen. Boulanger was hot from deep, hitting 5-of-7 of her three-point attempts for 15 points.
Faith Reid scored 18 point for the Cougars, going 4-for-8 from three. First-year guard
Cara Misskey added 12 points while recording a game-high seven assists.
The two teams play against each other again tomorrow, at 6:00, at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport.
