The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a season-opening weekend road sweep on Saturday night with a 92-77 victory over the Regina Cougars at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Faith Hezekiah powered the Winnipeg offence with a game-high 33 points, a good chunk of which came off her five three-pointers. Both Kyanna Giles (21 points, 10 rebounds) and Keylyn Filewich (13 points, 11 rebounds) collected double-doubles with Filewich also recording five blocks.
Faith Reid and
Julia Vydrova both had 13 points for the Cougars.
While the Cougars held a slim 24-23 lead after the opening quarter, Winnipeg had already started a game-changing 13-0 run by the time the opening period ended.
That gave the Wesmen a double-digit lead, and the closest the Cougars got after that was when an
Eden Wells triple brought Regina to within five points in the early stages of the fourth quarter. But the Cougars went the next four minutes without a field goal, and Winnipeg ended any hope of a late comeback by going on a 8-0 run which put them up 15 late.
Picked to finish first in the Canada West preseason coaches' poll, Winnipeg (2-0) remains undefeated this year as they also went through their non-conference schedule without a loss.
Regina (0-2) will continue conference play next weekend with two games against Saskatchewan in Saskatoon.
Winnipeg is also in action next weekend with a home-and-home with crosstown rival Manitoba. The two teams will play at the U of M on Friday night and at the U of W on Saturday night.
