Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars come up empty versus Huskies

The University of Regina's women's basketball team lost to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 81-48 on Friday night in Saskatoon.

Fifth-year forward Summer Masikewich scored a game-high 27 points and made five blocks to lead the Huskies to the win. Cougars fourth-year guard Faith Reid scored a team-high 14 points and hit 4-of-8 threes in the loss.

The first quarter was highly contested as both teams went back-and-fourth to account for six lead changes. Huskies guard Katriana Philipenko drained both of her three-point attempts, including a buzzer beater, to lead the team with eight points in the first. It was 18-15 for Saskatchewan after one.

The Huskies started to pull away in the second quarter. They outscored the Cougars 23-13 behind Masikewich's eight points on 4-of-4 shooting. Reid got hot for the Cougars, scoring eight points of her own but the rest of the team combined for just five points. Saskatchewan led 41-28 at the half.

Masikewich continued her dominant night in the third, going a perfect 6-of-6 from the field for 12 points. The Huskies followed her lead, as they went 13-of-17 on field goals to drop 29 points on the Cougars in the quarter. Reid hit two more threes but the Cougars only scored 16 points and the Huskies led 70-44 going into the final frame.

The fourth quarter was a forgettable one for both teams as Saskatchewan scored 11 points and the Cougars were held to just four. All four of those points came off free throws, as the Cougars shot 0-for-16 as a team to remain winless on the young season.

Fifth-year guard Libby Epoch scored 11 points, nabbed five rebounds, and dished out six assists for the Huskies.

First-year wing Jade Belmore continued her nice start to the season with 11 points and six rebounds for the Cougars.

The Cougars (0-3) and the Huskies (3-0) will face off against each other again tomorrow, at 8:15 in Saskatoon.
