Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Big second period lifts Manitoba to 4-2 win over Cougars

The University of Manitoba Bisons used a second-period outburst to skate to a 4-2 victory over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in a Canada West women's hockey game at Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg.

After a scoreless opening period, Manitoba got goals from Vanessa Klimpke, Kate Gregoire, and Jessica Haner in a span of 3:40 to jump out to a 3-0 lead by the eight-minute mark of the second. Julia Bird added another one for the Bisons late in the stanza, giving Manitoba a four-goal lead at the second intermission.

Olivia Leggett and Makena Kushniruk both scored for the Cougars in the third to make it a two-goal game, but that was as close as they'd get.

Erin Fargey got the call between the pipes and made 24 saves for the Bisons, who improve to 6-1-1-0 with the victory.

Natalie Williamson came on in relief of Katie Crowther after the Bisons' fourth goal and stopped all six shots she faced for Regina.

Leggett's goal was the first of her career as she sailed in a shot through traffic from the left point to get the Cougars on the board. Kushniruk's goal, her second of the year, came on the power play less than two minutes later as she pounced on a rebound following a Lilla Carpenter-Boesch shot.

Regina (1-4-0-2) will get another crack at Manitoba on Saturday afternoon. Puck drop is set for 3:00 PM (CDT).
