Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars collect first Canada West win with 68-52 victory over Manitoba

The University of Regina's women's basketball team put one in the win column on Friday night after scoring a 68-52 road victory over Manitoba on Friday night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg.

Faith Reid led the way for the Cougars as the fourth-year guard hit four triples and finished with a game-high 22 points.

The bus carrying the U of R's basketball teams didn't make it to Winnipeg on Thursday as originally planned, as the team had an unexpected overnight stop in Brandon because of dreadful road conditions due to a winter storm that swept over much of the Prairies.

"It's always good to get a win on the road and better given the tough travel experience we had getting to Winnipeg this weekend," Cougars head coach Dave Taylor said. "It wasn't pretty at times, but our defence stepped up and Faith hit some clutch threes to extend our lead in critical moments."

The Cougars used a 12-0 run to built up a double-digit lead early in the second quarter and led comfortably the rest of the way. The Cougars led by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter, but a late 11-0 run by Manitoba brought the eventual margin of victory down to 16.

Jade Belmore finished just short of a double-double for the Cougars, ending up with 11 points and nine rebounds. Kaitlyn Tonita also hit double digits with 10 points, while Julia Vydrova added nine and Maddy Seida scored eight.

The victory improves Regina's record to 1-4 after the Cougars had opened up the Canada West schedule with consecutive weekends against teams currently ranked among the top four teams in the nation.

Taylor Randall led Manitoba (0-3) with 17 points.

The Cougars and Manitoba will meet again on Saturday at the IGAC. Game time is set for 5:00 PM.
