Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars win to split weekend series versus Bisons

The University of Regina's men's basketball team defeated the University of Manitoba Bisons 77-68 on Saturday night at Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Benjamin Hillis (19 points, 10 assists) and Carter Millar (16 points, 17 rebounds) led the way for the Cougars to hand the Bisons their first loss of the season. Fifth-year guard Keiran Zziwa scored a team-high 16 points for the Bisons.

Regina looked strong coming out of the gate, getting out to a 16-7 lead with 4:04 left in the first quarter. Manitoba responded with an 11-4 run to end the quarter down 20-18. Cougars forward Matt Barnard scored nine points in the opening frame.

The Cougars again started the quarter strong, scoring the first 13 points and increasing their lead to 33-18 in the first four minutes. The Bisons once again responded, going on a 22-6 run the rest of the quarter to take a 40-39 lead into halftime. The Cougars led the entire second quarter until a last-second three by Manitoba guard Elijah Lostracco went in to take the lead back.

The third quarter was a reverse of the first two quarters as the Bisons started on an 18-4 run. The game of runs continued as the Cougars responded with a 15-2 run in the final three minutes to keep it close at 60-58 for the Bisons heading into the final quarter.

The Cougars carried that momentum into the fourth, going on a 17-3 run over the first eight minutes. That gave them a massive 32-5 run overall and a 75-63 lead with under two minutes remaining. That was enough to secure the victory as the Bisons ran out of time to make a comeback happen. The Cougars held the Bisons to eight points in the fourth to leave Winnipeg with a series split.

Matt Barnard scored 12 points for the Cougars, who also got contributions from Nick Barnard (11 points) and Josiah Thomas (nine points).

Lostracco was the only other player to score double-digits for the Bisons, getting 10 points and shooting a perfect 3-of-3 from three.

All Canada West basketball teams are on bye next weekend before resuming on November 26th. The Cougars (4-2) will host the University of Saskatchewan Huskies after the break and the Bisons (3-1) will host the University of Brandon Bobcats.
