The University of Regina's men's basketball team defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies to a score of 82-68 on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health, and Sport.
Carter Millar and
Josiah Thomas each scored a team-high 15 points to lead the Cougars to their fifth victory of the season. Regina had a balanced attack all night, as four players scored in double digits and every player who saw time on the court had at least one point. Third-year guard Marquavian Stephens scored a game-high 17 points for the Huskies.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair with neither team jumping out to lead larger than four. Both teams answered whenever they got down in score. There was seven lead changes in the opening frame and the game was tied 19-19 after one.
The second quarter, however, was a different story. The Cougars poured in 21 points while holding the Huskies to just four points. Regina's
Brayden Kuski and Millar were feeling it from deep, going a combined 4-of-7 from three in the second. The Cougars took a 40-23 lead into the halftime break.
The Huskies showed more fight in the third quarter, scoring 21 points, but could not stop the Cougars offence as they put up 24 points. Kuski continued his hot shooting from behind the arc, going 2-of-3 in the third. The Cougars increased their lead to 64-44 going into the final quarter.
Saskatchewan attempted to make a comeback in the fourth, chipping the Cougars lead down to nine points before ultimately falling short. Fifth-year guard
Benjamin Hillis hit 6-of-7 free throws in the fourth to keep the game out of reach.
Kuski finished with 14 points on the night. Hillis scored 10 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out five assists in the victory.
Chan De Ciman (11 points, seven rebounds) and Tyrese Potoma (10 points, 2-of-2 from three) contributed for the Huskies in the loss.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow, at 8:00, at the CKHS.
