Paige Hubbard scored the game's lone goal and
Arden Kliewer stopped all 27 shots she faced as the Regina Cougars edged the Calgary Dinos by a 1-0 score on Friday night in a Canada West game at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
Hubbard's goal came in the first period when
Lilla Carpenter-Boesch drove to the net and had her initial shot stopped. But Hubbard was there to pounce on the rebound, shelving it for the second-year forward's second goal of the season.
Kliewer and the U of R defence did the rest as the rookie goaltender earned her first career shutout.
"Arden definitely made some key saves for us at key times tonight," Cougars head coach
Sarah Hodges said. "Tonight we definitely had a better performance than we saw last weekend and we're headed in the right direction."
The win improves Regina's record to 4-5-2 as the Cougars have now won three of their past four games. The U of R sits in fifth place in the nine-team Canada West standings, one point ahead of sixth-place Alberta and two points back of UBC and Saskatchewan.
The Cougars and Calgary will meet again on Saturday afternoon at Father David Bauer Arena. Game time is set for 2:00 MT (3:00 SK).
NOTES: A total of 12 power plays were dished out during the contest ... Hubbard's goal came on one of them as the Cougars finished 1-for-7 with the advantage and Calgary was 0-for-5 ... shots favoured Regina by a 28-27 margin.
