The University of Regina's men's basketball team lost to the Saskatchewan Huskies 90-80 on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health, and Sport.
The Huskies were led by Alexander Dewar, who scored a team-high 21 points off the bench.
Brayden Kuski scored a game-high 24 points on 5-of-12 shooting from three point land.
Huskies guard Nervens Demosthene scored 12 of his 19 points in the opening quarter on 4-of-5 shooting. Kuski answered back with seven of his own and
Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo hit two triples to keep the Cougars ahead 26-24 after the first quarter.
Saskatchewan pulled ahead in the second quarter scoring 26 points while holding the Cougars to 15. That became the ultimate difference maker tonight, as the Huskies held onto the lead for the rest of the game. They took a 50-41 lead into the halftime break.
The Cougars continued to fight the rest of the night, but could not get stops when they needed them. The Huskies had an answer every time the Cougars got the lead down to single digits. As a result, the Huskies beat the Cougars for the first time this season.
It was a foul-heavy game, as the Cougars had two starters foul out in
Benjamin Hillis and
Josiah Thomas. Huskies players Maxwell Amoafo and Kessler Bishop also fouled out of this game.
Amoafo (seven points, 10 rebounds, two blocks) and guard Marquavian Stephens (12 points, five assists) helped the Huskies get the victory on the road.
Carter Millar (11 points, nine rebounds) and
Majok Madol (11 points, eight rebounds) almost had double-doubles for the Cougars tonight in the loss.
The Cougars (5-3) will have the rest of this year off before resuming play on January 14
th in Brandon. The Huskies (3-3) will head home to host the Manitoba Bisons next weekend.
