Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hillis leads Cougars to 87-76 win over Huskies

The University of Regina's men's basketball team defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 87-76 on Friday night in Saskatoon.

Fifth-year guard Benjamin Hillis scored a team-high 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting to lead the Cougars to the win. He chipped in eight rebounds and five assists. Josiah Thomas had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Cougars. Saskatchewan guard Alexander Dewar scored a game-high 30 points in the loss.

Regina started the game strong, jumping out to a 10-2 lead in the first three minutes. The Huskies answered back with a 12-6 run to lead 14-13 with 3:14 left in the first. The two teams proceeded to trade baskets until a Thomas jumper gave the Cougars a 20-17 lead at the end of the first.

The Cougars led the entire second quarter but the Huskies kept the game close. The Cougars led by as many as seven points on three different occasions but the Huskies never let the lead get farther than that. Hillis scored seven points in the frame to keep Regina ahead 41-36 going into halftime.

The third quarter was when the Cougars started to pull away. They went on a 16-2 run to push the lead to 19 points with 5:30 left in the quarter. Hillis shot a perfect 3-of-3 and hit both of his free throws to score nine points. Despite the Huskies making up some ground to end the quarter, they were still down 67-53 after three.

The Huskies outscored the Cougars 23-20 in the fourth but it was not enough. The duo of Carter Millar and Hillis scored six points apiece to keep the Cougars ahead despite Dewar getting 10 points of his own. His effort came up short and the Cougars secured their second win of the season.

Second-year forward Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo scored 10 points, grabbed eight rebounds and added four assists for the Cougars.

Guards Marquavian Stephens (19 points, seven rebounds, six assists) and Nervens Demosthene (12 points, 8 rebounds) contributed for the Huskies.

The Cougars (2-1) and the Huskies (2-1) will have a rematch tomorrow, in Saskatoon, at 6:00.
