Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars fall to Huskies in Saskatoon

The University of Regina's women's basketball team lost to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 82-52 on Saturday night in Saskatoon.

Huskies fifth-year forward Summer Masikewich dominated for a second night in a row as she scored a game-high 29 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the team to a weekend sweep of the Cougars. Third-year guard Carly Ahlstrom scored 17 points and shot 3-of-5 from three for the Huskies. Cougars first-year guard Cara Misskey scored a team-high 19 points.

Masikewich scored eight points in the opening quarter on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting. Cougars guard Faith Reid answered back with two threes and six points of her own. It was not enough to keep pace with the Huskies however, as they shot 9-of-16 as a team to take a 23-14 lead into the second quarter.

The Huskies opened the floodgates in the second quarter, scoring 22 points and holding the Cougars to just five. Saskatchewan guard Libby Epoch and Masikewich scored eight points apiece in the frame. The Huskies held a commanding 45-19 lead after two quarters.

The Cougars played better in the second half, scoring 33 points over the final two quarters. They held the Huskies to 37 points but the first half deficit was too big to overcome. Cara Misskey scored 10 points in the fourth quarter but it was ultimately not enough as the Cougars suffered their fourth loss of the season.

Epoch scored 15 points with seven rebounds and a game-high seven assists in the win for the Huskies.

Reid scored 13 points and shot 3-of-9 from three for the Cougars.

The Cougars travel to Winnipeg next weekend to take on the Manitoba Bisons. The Huskies have a bye week before traveling to Regina to play the Cougars again in two weeks.
