Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cougars tie Wesmen in home opener

The University of Regina's women's soccer team tied the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 1-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars had a strong start to the game, pushing aggressively and generating three corner kick opportunities in the first five minutes. Winnipeg responded quickly with a goal in the eighth minute that was almost stopped by the Cougars. Regina slowed down after that, with only one more corner kick in the rest of the first half. The Wesmen played strong defensively all game and did not give the Cougars many good looks at the net.

In the second half, the Cougars were pushing hard for a goal. Peyton Enns had a great strike that the Wesmen keeper just deflected over the net with her outstretched arms. Kyra Vibert had a breakaway about midway through the second half which was turned away again by the Wesmen goalkeeper.

With less than 10 minutes to go, Kyra Vibert got a second chance. She raced passed the defense on a great long pass from Ally Schneider and tucked it into the right side of the net to tie the game at one.

"It's a tough game and it's a learning experience for our young group. It's the first home game and there is a relatively large crowd here so it's good to see that," Cougars Interim Head Coach Rob McCaffrey said. "I thought we started very strong and we gave up that one goal and it kind of set us back on our heels a little bit. Proud of the way that the girls were able to respond a little towards the end of the game and fight to get that goal. It was a fantastic finish from Vibert which is something we expect from some of our senior players. We are unfortunate not to get the three points but on this day we we'll take the one and we will regroup for tomorrow."

The Cougars backline played a solid game after the early goal by Winnipeg. They prevented Winnipeg from creating any more great chances. Allyson Ford had a good game for the Cougars, making nine saves.

The Cougars face the Wesmen again, tomorrow at 12:00pm, on the U of R Field.
