Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Enns scores twice as Cougars earn second win of season

The University of Regina's women's soccer team defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the U of R Field.

Peyton Enns scored both of the match's goals just two minutes apart early in the second half, giving the first-year forward three strikes in her first four Canada West contests. Allyson Ford made three saves to secure her second shutout of the young season for the Cougars, who are now 2-1-1 and sit in second place in the East Division with seven points.

"We talked about doing the basic things well, and then the rest of the picture would open up from there," said Cougars interim co-head coach Astrid Baecker. "I think we did a really good job of holding and maintaining meaningful possession and really choosing our moments of when to release the ball which really was an improvement from yesterday."

Both teams started off slowly, with Winnipeg and Regina only getting one shot each in the first 15 minutes of the game. The Cougars started to get rolling after that, ending the first half with eight shots and six corner kicks. In the second half, the Cougars' offence started to heat up. Early in the half, Sally Bachmann got free for a breakaway but was taken down in the box by Wesmen defender. Peyton Enns got the opportunity on the penalty shot and launched it perfectly into the right side of the net to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Only two minutes later, Enns struck again with her second of the match. Grace Miller placed a short pass perfectly to only where Enns could get it and she put it home to give the Cougars a two-goal cushion.

"Our back line really was an anchor in holding our possession. They were continuously in good angles that we could play that ball back in a supporting position and they looked to change the side of attack and supported us and it all started with them," Baecker said.

The Cougars will face off against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies next weekend in a home-and-home series, as they'll travel to Saskatoon to play the Huskies on Friday night before hosting them at the U of R Field on Sunday at noon. Winnipeg (0-2-2) will also get ready for a Friday/Sunday provincial battle as the Wesmen meet Manitoba.
