The University of Regina's women's basketball team used two strong middle quarters to pull away from the Brandon Bobcats for a convincing 84-59 victory on Friday night in Brandon.
Jade Belmore was 5-for-9 from the field, hit all five of her free throws, and led all players in both points (15) and rebounds (11) in the victory.
Faith Reid hit four three-pointers and finished with 14 points for the Cougars, while
Zoe Hartmann scored 13 points and
Julia Vydrova added 12.
The game was tight through a quarter and a half as the two teams were tied 16-16 through one and Brandon led as late as six minutes into the second, but the Cougars seized control of the game with a massive run to finish the opening half. Highlighted by three-pointers on three consecutive possessions by
Kaitlyn Tonita,
Madeleine Tell, and Hartmann, the Cougars closed out the second quarter on a 19-4 run to take a 14-point lead into the break. Regina went on another 9-0 run in the third quarter to build up a 20-point advantage.
Chelsea Misskey, sister of Regina's
Cara Misskey, finished with 11 points for Brandon (0-9).
The Cougars improve their Canada West record to 3-6 with the victory. They take over sole possession of third place in the East Division after pulling ahead of Manitoba, which lost to crosstown rival Winnipeg on Friday night.
The Cougars and Brandon will meet again on Saturday night at BU's Healthy Living Centre. Tip-off is set for 5:00.
