Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars bring 13 skaters to Saskatoon; come back with gutsy win over Huskies

With just 13 skaters available, the University of Regina's women's hockey team travelled up to Saskatoon and used three third-period goals to pull away from the Saskatchewan Huskies for a 4-1 win on Friday night.

The teams headed into the third deadlocked at 1-1, but Lilla Carpenter-Boesch scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal midway through the final stanza after poking away an errant pass with the U of S on a power play. Carpenter-Boesch had a clear-cut breakaway from Regina's own blue line and beat Saskatchewan goalie Camryn Drever for her fifth goal of the campaign.

The Cougars added an insurance marker with four minutes to go when Olivia Leggett scored from the point on the power play, and Jordyn Blais ended any hope of a U of S comeback with a late empty net goal.

Arden Kliewer was outstanding between the pipes for the Cougars, finishing with 34 saves in the win.

"We knew we were up against it missing so many skaters, but we wanted to hang in there as long as we could," Cougars head coach Sarah Hodges said. "Once we did that, we got better as the game went on and buried our opportunities in the third. Everyone worked extremely hard and took the right approach tonight and we just found a way to get it done."

After a scoreless opening period, the two teams traded goals in the second. Meg Dyer opened the scoring for Saskatchewan, but Regina's Lauren Focht scored just two and a half minutes later when she pounced on a loose puck following a Carpenter-Boesch shot attempt.

The Cougars improve to 5-6-2 with the victory as they move past MacEwan into sixth place in the Canada West standings.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre in Regina. Game time is 7:00 and can be viewed at canadawest.tv.
