The University of Regina men's hockey team fell to the Mount Royal Cougars by a score of 4-3 on Friday night in Calgary in a Canada West conference game.
Â
Despite goals from
Tanner Sidaway,
Jackson Doucet, and
Conner Chaulk, the Regina Cougars could not hold on to a 3-2 lead after Mount Royal's Kyle Walker and Josh Tarzwell scored 2in the last 65 seconds to give Mount Royal their first win in five games.
Â
Regina's Sidaway scored the lone goal of the opening frame after putting away a bouncing rebound off a shot from
Mike Eskra. Mount Royal answered quickly in the second, with Ryley Lindgren getting the puck past Regina goalie
Brandon Holtby just 27 seconds in.
Â
Nolan Yaremko gave Mount Royal a 2-1 lead just over ten minutes later and would lead until Doucet tied it up on the penalty kill at the 4:36 mark. Doucet stole the puck at Mount Royal's blue line and finished his short-handed breakaway by beating Mount Royal goalie Riley Morris five-hole.
Â
In the third,
Christian Riemer found Chaulk sitting behind Mount Royal's defence and dished him a pass that let Chaulk get the easy tip-in to put Regina up 3-2. Regina held this lead until
Bryce Platt was sent to the box for cross-checking, giving Mount Royal a 6-on-4 opportunity after pulling Morris. Walker tied the game with 1:05 remaining, and Tarzwell took advantage of a Regina miscue and scored the game-winning goal 40 seconds later.
Â
Regina and Mount Royal will face off again tomorrow at 4:00 PM Saskatchewan time to finish the weekend series in Calgary, AB.
