Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars settle for three-point weekend after overtime loss to MacEwan

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's hockey team erased a two-goal third-period deficit to force overtime, but MacEwan scored in the extra session to secure a 3-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MacEwan led 1-0 after one period thanks to an Aryn Chambers goal. Claire Hobbs added another in the second to put the visitors up by two goals through 40 minutes.
  • Hannah Pennell got the Cougars on the board with a hard shot from the top of the left faceoff circle with Lauren Focht screening MacEwan's goalie.
  • Just 55 seconds later, the Cougars tied it up courtesy of Heather Fiske's deflection of a Rachel O'Toole point shot.
  • MacEwan picked up the extra point in overtime after Mila Verbicky scored 1:40 into the extra session.

NOTES
  • After the first weekend of Canada West play, the Cougars (1-0-1) and Mount Royal are the only two teams in the league with three points. All six other teams that played split their weekend series and have two points.
  • Pennell and Merk were the only two players in the conference to have four-point weekends. Both players had two goals and two assists in the series against MacEwan.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars have next weekend off and will return to action with a two-game road trip to Manitoba on Oct. 14 and Oct. 15.
