Cougars drop 2-1 decision to Manitoba in Canada West home opener

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's hockey team fell 2-1 to the Manitoba Bisons in what was the Cougars' Canada West home opener on Friday night at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first period, Manitoba scored twice in a span of just over two minutes early in the second. Colton Veloso opened the scoring on the power play, then Chase Hartje added to the lead with an end-to-end rush.
  • Matt Culling got the Cougars to within one after knocking home a loose puck midway through the third.
  • The Cougars launched an all-out onslaught in the third period and outshot Manitoba 23-1 in the final frame alone, but Culling's goal was the only shot to beat Bisons goalie Ross Hawryluk.

NOTES
  • Culling now has goals in all three Canada West games and is the U of R's leading scorer with three goals, three assists, and six points.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars and the Bisons will wrap up the two-game weekend series on Saturday afternoon at The Co-operators Centre. Puck drop is set for 3:00 PM.
