Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cougars finish 2022 season with huge road win over Alberta

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's soccer team played the role of spoiler to perfection on Sunday, finishing the 2022 campaign with a 2-1 victory over Alberta at Foote Field in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Delaney Rhinehart lofted a long ball up to Abby Patterson. A Pandas defender got a piece of it, but not enough and Patterson was able to collect it and knock it home for her first U SPORTS goal.
  • Nicole Klassen extended the U of R lead to 2-0 in the 76th minute after getting a nice through ball from Jessica Chow and redirecting it past the Alberta keeper.
  • Alberta cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal from Erin Hope in the 84th minute, but the Cougars were able to hang on for their second Canada West victory of the season.

NOTES
  • Sunday's outcome was both impactful and historic. It was not only the Cougars' first-ever victory in Edmonton, but also threw a wrench in the Prairie Division standings as the Pandas needed just a single point to secure second place and a home playoff date. Instead, it'll be Mount Royal taking second place in the division while Alberta will now have to travel out to Trinity Western for the quarterfinals.
  • Cassandra De Amaral and Allyson Ford split the goalkeeping duties. De Amaral saved two shots in the first half, while Ford made eight saves in the second half to help secure the victory.
  • The Cougars (2-7-5) scored 21 goals this year, eclipsing the previous team single-season record of 19.

QUOTABLE
  • "This season has been rich with learning opportunities that we'll use to push this program forward. Today was a display of Cougar pride and I am so incredibly proud of what this group has accomplished. A first win for our program in Edmonton and a program record for most goals in a season. We played for our seniors today and, most importantly, we played for every single person that supports our dreams, our passions, and our program. We asked the players to leave everything on the field today and they did just that." - Cougars head coach Astrid Baecker
