Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

UBC Okanagan wins in straight sets over Cougars

QUICKLY
  • Back in its usual home in the main gym of the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport after a Friday night in Gym 1, the University of Regina's women's volleyball team fell in three straight sets to UBC Okanagan on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UBC Okanagan escaped with a 25-23 win in the opening set despite the Cougars leading as late as 23-22 after a Nya Chiek kill. The Heat answered that Chiek kill with a Sydney Grills kill to tie it up, then took the lead on a block by Grills and Madison Gardner and clinched the set on a U of R attack error.
  • The Cougars jumped out to a 16-11 lead, but the Heat called timeout and promptly reeled off seven of the next nine points to tie it up at 18-18 on a run that was capped by back-to-back Madelyn Hettinga kills. UBC Okanagan again closed the set with three straight points, finishing with a 25-22 victory.
  • Regina again took an early lead in the third set as the Cougars built up a 5-2 advantage, but UBC Okanagan went on a massive 18-6 run to take control and clinched the match with a 25-15 victory.

NOTES
  • Chiek ended up leading the Cougars in both kills and digs, finishing with eight and six, respectively.
  • Dryden Gris made her U of R debut in the third set, putting down a kill on her only swing of the match.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars (0-2) will be back in action next weekend with their first road trip of the Canada West schedule. They'll square off with Calgary (1-0) next Friday and Saturday at the Jack Simpson Gym on the U of C campus.
