Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars hang tough, but fall 4-3 to No. 2 Alberta

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's hockey team hung tight with the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, but the Alberta Golden Bears held on for a 4-3 win on Saturday afternoon at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tyler Preziuso opened up the scoring on the power play for Alberta just three minutes into the game, but the Cougars replied later on in the period with a power play goal of their own. Brady Pouteau fired a shot wide off the end boards, but Griffin Asham-Moroz pounced on it and scored his first Canada West goal to tie it up at 1-1.
  • Pouteau was involved in the U of R's second goal as well. After some great forechecking by the Cougars, the third-year defenceman's shot from the point was deflected by Ty Barnstable to give the home side a 2-1 lead.
  • Alberta's Jared Freadrich tied it up midway through the second and the teams went into the second intermission all knotted up at 2-2.
  • Ryan Hughes put the Golden Bears into the lead with a goal five minutes into the third, then Matt Fonteyne scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal six minutes later.
  • Mike Eskra got the Cougars back to within one with a beautiful shot from the top of the left circle, but the U of R wasn't able to get the game-tying goal despite some extended pressure with goalie Curtis Meger pulled for an extra attacker.

NOTES
  • Pouteau's two assists gave him his third multi-point performance of the season.
  • Meger ended up stopping 29 of Alberta's 33 shots.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars (2-5-1) will now prepare for a home-and-home with Saskatchewan next weekend. They'll host the Huskies at The Co-operators Centre on Friday night before heading up to Saskatoon for a game on Saturday night.
