Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Spectacular offence leads No. 2 Cougars to win over Saskatchewan

QUICKLY
  • The No. 2-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team hit a school-record 20 three-pointers on Friday night in a big 108-95 victory over the No. 4 Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

A RECORD DAY
  • Dayna Pearce drilled six three-pointers while Jade Belmore hit five and both Zoe Hartmann and Cara Misskey hit four. Julia Vydrova hit the other triple for the Cougars, helping them break the team record of 17 that they set back in 2014 against Winnipeg.
  • The Cougars' total of 108 points is the third highest in team history, trailing only a 118-51 win over Brandon in 2018 and a 111-56 victory over Brandon in 1991.

DOUBLE TROUBLE
  • Belmore and Misskey were simply brilliant for the Cougars in the win. Both second-year guards poured in 28 points with Belmore adding eight rebounds and five assists and Misskey registering seven assists and five steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars never trailed after opening the second quarter with 10 straight points, a run capped by back-to-back triples by Pearce and Misskey. Regina's lead ballooned to 23 at one point late in the fourth, and Saskatchewan was able to get the last 10 points of the contest to bring the U of R's margin of victory down to 13.

QUOTABLE
  • "It was an exciting game for the fans and a tough game for the coaches. Every offensive possession I was thrilled with what they were doing, and every defensive possession I was frustrated with how much we were conceding. I liked out pace to the game and I'm sure both teams will clean up defensively for tomorrow, but it was definitely a great battle between a couple of provincial rivals tonight." - Cougars head coach Dave Taylor

NEXT UP
  • The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS. Tip-off is again scheduled for 6:00 PM.
