Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars challenged, but overcome Manitoba for 91-82 win

QUICKLY
  • The No. 1-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team jumped out to a massive early lead, but had to overcome a Manitoba push before finally putting away the Bisons for an 91-82 victory on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars led 30-18 after the opening period and looked to be well on their way to a big win after pushing the lead to as many as 23 points in the second quarter, but Manitoba went on a 14-2 run before halftime to get to within 11 at the break.
  • Manitoba carried the momentum from that run into the second half, staying within range of the Cougars before getting a Lauren Bartlett triple and a Keziah Brothers bucket on consecutive possessions that made it a one-possession game with eight minutes to go.
  • The Cougars clamped down on the defensive side of the ball down the stretch, not conceding a field goal for over five minutes while building the lead back up to double digits.

NOTES
  • Jade Belmore and Cara Misskey both had massive games for the Cougars. Belmore had 28 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists while Misskey finished with 22 points, eight assists, and six rebounds.
  • Dayna Pearce and Zoe Hartmann both finished with three three-pointers. Pearce had 13 points, while Madeleine Tell also hit double figures with 11 points.
  • Brothers led Manitoba with 19 points.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will put their unblemished conference record on the line next weekend at UBC Okanagan. They'll meet the 5-3 Heat on Friday night and Saturday afternoon in Kelowna, B.C.
