Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Schmidt scores twice, but Cougars fall 4-3 to Saskatchewan

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's hockey team saw a two-goal lead evaporate in the third period as the Saskatchewan Huskies came back to win 4-3 in a rare Tuesday night game in Saskatoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Randen Schmidt opened the scoring on a one-timer off an Eric Pearce pass from behind the net 13 minutes into the game. Schmidt's goal was the only one of the opening period as the Cougars took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
  • Saskatchewan tied it up on a Liam Keeler power play goal early in the second period, but the Cougars replied in a big way as Riley Krane and Schmidt scored in a span of just 25 seconds to put the Cougars up 3-1. Krane's goal was on the power play as he pounced on a rebound following a drive to the net by Tyler Heidt, while Schmidt's second of the game came off a shot from the right point.
  • The Cougars were whistled for four consecutive minors in the third and Saskatchewan took full advantage as Cael Zimmerman scored on the power play midway through the period and Jared Dmytriw tied it up with the Huskies' third power play goal of the game with six and a half minutes remaining. And less than a minute after the Dmytriw goal, Carter Stebbings scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal for the U of S.

NOTES
  • Schmidt's two-goal night was the first of his Canada West career. He now has four points this season, all of which have come in his past three games.
  • Adam Evanoff got the start in net for the Cougars and stopped 29 of Saskatchewan's 33 shots.
  • Tuesday's game marked the first time the Cougars had played a Tuesday conference game since defeating Manitoba 5-4 in overtime back on Feb. 11, 2003 in a game played in Whitewood, Sask.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars are back at home this weekend for two games against UBC. Both Friday's game and Saturday's game will have a 7:00 PM start time at The Co-operators Centre.
