Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

UBC jumps out to early lead; wins 6-1 over Cougars

QUICKLY
  • The UBC Thunderbirds scored twice in the game's opening minute, led 4-0 after the first period, and cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Regina Cougars on Friday night at The Co-operators Centre in Regina.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tian Rask scored the opening goal just 24 seconds after the opening faceoff on what was a bad bounce for the Cougars. Rask directed a weak backhand in the general direction of the U of R net which bounced off a Cougar defenceman and into the net. And UBC wasn't done there. Jake Lee scored on a slap shot from the left circle just 35 seconds later to put UBC up two.
  • The Thunderbirds got another one courtesy of James Form's first Canada West goal midway through the first, and a goal by Scott Atkinson in the final minute of the period gave UBC a 4-0 lead at the first intermission.
  • UBC dominated the shots 16-3 in the second period, but the next goal wasn't scored until Jayden Davis was set up by Tyler Heidt late in the third to cut the Thunderbirds' lead to three.
  • Atkinson and Ethan McIndoe added goals in the final two minutes for UBC.

NOTES
  • Adam Evanoff came on after the second UBC goal and stopped 41 of the 45 shots he faced.
  • Brennan Riddle also assisted on the Davis goal. Both Riddle and Heidt have a team-leading 13 assists this season.

NEXT UP
  • The two teams will finish off the weekend series on Saturday night (7:00 PM) at The Co-operators Centre.
