Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars downed by No. 3 UBC in weekend opener

QUICKLY

  • The University of Regina's women's hockey team suffered a 5-1 loss to UBC on Friday night in what was their third game of an 11-day road trip to the West Coast.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Grace Elliott got UBC on the board with the only goal of the first period 15 minutes into the contest.
  • The Thunderbirds held onto the one-goal lead until Mia Bierd and Ashton Thorpe scored just over two minutes apart midway through the second. Sierra LaPlante added another goal for UBC with five minute to go in the middle frame, putting UBC up 4-0 through 40 minutes.
  • Lauren Focht scored her first of the season for the Cougars midway through the third. Trinity Grove passed the puck in front of the net and it bounced off Kaylee Dyer's skate right to Focht, who turned and snapped a shot by the UBC goalie.
  • UBC added a late insurance marker as Chanreet Bassi notched a power play goal with 28 seconds to go.

NOTES

  • Dyer's helper goes into the books as her first career Canada West assist.
  • Regina goalie Natalie Williamson stopped 45 of UBC's 50 shots.

NEXT UP

  • The two teams will close out the weekend series with a Saturday afternoon affair at UBC. Game time is set for 3:00 PT/5:00 SK.
