Cougars upset by UBC Okanagan in Kelowna

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's basketball team fell behind early to UBC Okanagan and never recovered, losing 89-84 to the Heat on Saturday afternoon in Kelowna, B.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UBC Okanagan jumped out to a 23-18 lead after the opening period and extended that advantage to 11 at halftime as the Heat took a 44-33 edge into the break.
  • The Heat maintained their double-digit lead throughout the third quarter and their advantage swelled to 18 at one point in the fourth, but the Cougars battled back with an 11-0 run. They made it a one-possession game after a four-point play by Jade Belmore with 16 seconds left made the score 86-84 and had a chance to tie it after UBC Okanagan made one of two free throws, but Belmore's attempt from the top of the three-point arc rimmed out and the Heat pulled down the rebound to secure the upset.

NOTES
  • Belmore had a team-high 24 points and added 13 rebounds for a double-double.
  • Julia Vydrova also had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Cara Misskey scored 18 points and dished out eight assists while Dayne Pearce finished with 10 points.
  • The Cougars fall to 7-1 on the season after opening up Canada West play with seven consecutive victories.
  • Jaeli Ibbetson had 32 points, 14 rebounds, and seven assists for UBC Okanagan.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will take to the court next against three NJCAA Div. II opponents at the Phoenix College Holiday Classic the last week of December. They'll start out against tournament host Phoenix College on Dec. 28, then play Scottsdale CC on Dec. 29 and South Mountain CC on Dec. 30. They'll then square off against Arizona Christian, an NAIA school in nearby Glendale, Ariz., on Dec. 31 before heading back to Regina.
