Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars finish regular season with four-set loss to Brandon

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team won the first set, but dropped the next three in a four-set road loss to the Brandon Bobcats on Saturday night at the Healthy Living Centre in Brandon.

The Cougars finish the Canada West schedule with a 5-11 record. Their fifth-place finish in the East Division will land them in a pod with host Alberta, Winnipeg, and either UBC or UBC Okanagan in the first round of the conference playoffs next weekend in Edmonton.

Saturday's match saw the Cougars pull out a convincing 25-18 win in the first set, and they had two chances to put a stranglehold on the match as the visitors held 25-24 and 26-25 leads in the second set.

But Brandon was able to evade both of those set points to come away with a 28-26 win, and then scored a second consecutive 28-26 victory in the third set.

The fourth set was all Bobcats as they rolled to a 25-13 victory to clinch the win.

Rayvn Wiebe finished with a match-high 24 kills for Brandon while also collecting 12 digs. Nicole Ashauer added 10 kills for the Bobcats, who finish in second place in the East Division with an 8-8 record.

Jessica Lerminiaux led the Cougars in kills for the 16th time in 16 Canada West games this year, finishing the night with 20 to go along with a .275 hitting percentage.

Sierra Parris-Kruger finished with a team-high 16 digs for Regina.

The U of R's schedule for next weekend is expected to be announced by Canada West by Sunday. Check reginacougars.com for matchup dates and times.

NOTES: Lerminiaux finishes the season with 265 kills, the sixth most in U of R history in a single year ... she also finishes her four years with the Cougars with 891 kills, which ranks behind only Michelle Sweeting, Beth Clark, and Tammy Jule on the U of R's all-time rally-point era list.
