The No. 2-ranked Trinity Western Spartans took a 4-0 victory over the Regina Cougars on Sunday afternoon at the U of R Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trinity Western scored twice in the first half, with Anna Dunn opening the scoring following a free kick in the 35th minute and then scoring the other on a penalty kick in injury time
- The Spartans added two more early in the second half as Charis Wardrope collected her Canada West-leading seventh goal in the 51st minute and Sierra Halldorson added one more in the 55th
- The U of R's best chances to score came in the 15th minute when Taylor Bubnick rifled a shot off the cross bar from 35 yards out and in the 73rd minute when TWU keeper Hannah Miller made a fine save on a Jessica Merk free kick that was labelled for the top left corner
STANDINGS
- Trinity Western improves to 5-1-0 as the Spartans win their fourth consecutive Canada West game
- The Cougars fall to 0-3-3 and are now six points back of the final Prairie Division playoff berth as Mount Royal won on Sunday and Saskatchewan picked up a draw
NEXT UP
Regina hits the road next weekend for what will be a pivotal road trip to Winnipeg. They'll play against the University of Winnipeg on Friday, take on the University of Manitoba on Saturday, and then will clash with the Wesmen again on Sunday in what will be a continuation of the Aug. 28 match in Regina which was suspended at halftime due to lightning strikes near the U of R Field.
