Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars hold off Winnipeg for Saturday road victory

QUICKLY
  • The No. 1-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team held off No. 6 Winnipeg for a 79-76 road win on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars led for nearly the entire game, with Winnipeg's 13-11 lead in the first quarter the only time the Wesmen were in front.
  • Regina held a 38-33 advantage at the break, led 58-51 after the third quarter, and scored the opening five points of the fourth to go up by 12, their largest lead of the game.
  • Winnipeg battled back to make it a one-possession game with a minute and a half to go, but the Cougars calmly hit six free throws down the stretch to help seal the win. Cara Misskey, Dayna Pearce, and Julia Vydrova all hit a pair of freebies in the final 75 seconds and Winnipeg missed a good look at the buzzer for a three-pointer that would have sent the game to overtime.

NOTES
  • The Cougars (10-2) leave the weekend the same way they entered it, in first place in the Canada West standings. Saskatchewan also holds a 10-2 record, but the Cougars would take the tiebreaker thanks to their two-game sweep over the Huskies earlier this season.
  • Pearce drilled four three-pointers and poured in a career-high 21 points for the Cougars while also registering 7 rebounds and 7 assists.
  • Vydrova and Jade Belmore both added 14 points, with Vydrova also pulling down 13 rebounds for a double-double.
  • Zoe Hartmann chipped in with 10 points.

QUOTABLE
  • "I was proud of how we bounced back from last night. We had great energy and every time Winnipeg hit a big shot, we responded. It was a well-played game between two very good teams." - Cougars head coach Dave Taylor

NEXT UP
  • Two more road games are upcoming on the Canada West schedule for the Cougars, as they'll head to the West Coast for two games at UBC next Friday and Saturday.
