Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Huge fourth-quarter run lifts Cougars over UBC

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's basketball team had a massive fourth-quarter comeback and took out UBC by a 60-53 score on Friday night in Vancouver.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UBC led for the vast majority of the low-scoring contest, and took its largest lead of the game after a Hailey Counsell bucket put the Thunderbirds in front 46-36 with seven minutes to go in the fourth.
  • But the momentum changed from there. UBC only got one more field goal in the next six minutes following Counsell's layup, and in the meantime the Cougars reeled off a 21-2 run with Zoe Hartmann scoring 10 of those points.
  • The huge run turned UBC's 10-point lead into a 57-48 advantage with under a minute to go. The Thunderbirds hit a late triple to get to within five, but Jade Belmore sunk a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession to end any chance of a UBC miracle.

NOTES
  • Cara Misskey led the Cougars with 19 points and also put up 6 assists and 4 rebounds. Hartmann also finished in double figures in scoring with 12 points.
  • The Cougars (11-2) remain in first place in the Canada West standings. Another win tomorrow would lock up a Canada West playoff berth with three weekends still remaining on the conference schedule.

NEXT UP
  • Regina and UBC will meet again on Saturday night in Vancouver. Game time is set for 4:00 PM (PST).
