Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars complete weekend road sweep with win over UBC

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's basketball team locked down a big weekend sweep on Saturday night with a 73-64 road win over UBC in Vancouver.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars stormed out to a 25-13 lead after the opening quarter, but UBC closed the half on an 8-0 run to trail by just five at the break.
  • UBC continued to play the U of R tight in the third, tying up the game on two different occasions before Jade Belmore sparked an 8-0 run by the Cougars to take the lead for good.
  • Sara Toneguzzi's bucket with about four minutes to go got UBC to within five points, but that was as close as they'd get as the Cougars held on for their second win in as many nights over the Thunderbirds.

NOTES
  • Belmore and Zoe Hartmann led the Cougars with 14 points each. Belmore added 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals in the win.
  • Cara Misskey (11 points) and Dayna Pearce (10) also scored in double figures for the Cougars.
  • The win locks up a playoff berth for the Cougars for the 27th consecutive season. They've qualified for the postseason in all 21 of their Canada West seasons, and last failed to make the playoffs in 1995 when they were still members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars are at home the next two weekends. They'll host Lethbridge next Friday and Saturday before entertaining Calgary on Feb. 3 and Feb. 4.
