Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Davis' overtime winner lifts Cougars to road win over Alberta

QUICKLY
  • Jayden Davis' overtime winner gave the University of Regina's men's hockey team a 3-2 victory over Alberta on Friday night in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars opened the scoring less than four minutes into the game when Davis found Matt Culling in front of the net.
  • The score stayed 1-0 for Regina until past the midway point of the second when Alberta's Jakin Smallwood tied it up.
  • The Cougars responded almost immediately while shorthanded. Tyler Heidt lifted a beautiful pass from the left boards out front to Eric Pearce, who knocked it home to put the visitors back out in front.
  • Nolan Volcan scored just a minute and a half into the third to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Less than two minutes into overtime, Davis drove wide around an Alberta defenceman and tucked it past Alberta's Ethan Kruger as the Golden Bears goaltender attempted a poke check.

NOTES
  • Regina goalie Adam Evanoff was brilliant in the win, stopping 40 of Alberta's 42 shots.
  • The Cougars improve to 8-13-2 with the win and move back into sole possession of the sixth and final Canada West postseason berth.

QUOTABLE
  • "I'm proud of my guys tonight. We played hard from start to finish. I really liked Evanoff's game tonight and we did a great job of allowing him to see the puck." - Cougars head coach Todd Johnson

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will look for a historic win on Saturday night. A victory would give them their first weekend sweep over Alberta since the 1991-92 season, and their first ever weekend sweep over the Golden Bears in Edmonton. Game time is set for 7:00 PM (MST).
