Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars settle for weekend split after Saturday loss to Alberta

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's hockey team suffered an 8-4 loss to Alberta on Saturday night in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Alberta's Matt Fonteyne opened the scoring on the power play late in the first period, but Jayden Davis replied just two minutes later for the Cougars on a breakaway which resulted from a blocked shot by Eric Houk.
  • Alberta then scored three times in the span of 64 seconds to give the Golden Bears a 4-1 lead at the first intermission. Fonteyne scored on a penalty shot before Tyler Preziuso and Justin Hall added goals for the home side.
  • Alberta all but ended any hope of a comeback with two quick goals in the second as Jakin Smallwood and Josh Paterson scored to push the lead to 6-1.
  • Riley Krane knocked in a rebound following a Brady Pouteau shot, but Preziuso struck again to restore Alberta's comfortable five-goal cushion through 40 minutes.
  • Smallwood scored again in the third period for Alberta before Scott Mickoski and Krane both notched goals in the dying minutes of the contest.

NOTES
  • Krane also assisted on Mickoski's goal, giving him a three-point night.
  • The Cougars (8-14-2) remain in possession of the sixth and final Canada West postseason berth despite the loss, thanks to UBC's blowout win over MacEwan.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will now prepare for a home-and-home with Saskatchewan. They'll face the Huskies on Friday in Saskatoon before returning to Regina on Saturday night for what will be their final home game of the 2022-23 season. Game time is set for 7:00 PM at The Co-operators Centre.
