Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars clipped 2-1 by Alberta in Friday opener

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's hockey team suffered a close 2-1 loss to Alberta on Friday night at The Co-operators Centre in Regina.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless opening period, Alberta opened the scoring midway through the second when Natalie Kieser found Bree Kennedy in the low slot. Kennedy's one-timer found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
  • The Cougars tied it up on the power play on a beautiful passing play between Paige Hubbard, Jenna Merk, and Ireland Sorestad. Hubbard sent a pass behind the goal line to Merk, who found Sorestad in front of the net for a one-timer.
  • Alberta scored the game-winning goal on the power play 11:45 into the third as Sara Kazeil fired a shot from the left point through a screen.
  • Regina generated several quality scoring chances in the final two minutes with goalie Natalie Williamson pulled, but the Cougars weren't able to find the equalizer.

NOTES
  • Williamson stopped 29 of Alberta's 31 shots.
  • Alberta was 1-for-5 on the power play while Regina was 1-for-2.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars and the Pandas will square off again on Saturday afternoon (3:00) at The Co-operators Centre.
