Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 4 Alberta takes overtime win over Cougars

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's hockey team gave No. 4-ranked Alberta all it could handle for a second straight game, but an overtime goal sent the Pandas home with a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first two periods were a battle between Regina goalie Arden Kliewer and Pandas netminder Halle Oswald. Neither team scored a goal in the first two periods despite Alberta directing 21 shots at Kliewer and the Cougars registering 13 shots on net.
  • It took over 56 minutes until the game's opening goal, which came in the form of a Hayleigh Craig deflection with the Pandas on a power play.
  • The Cougars responded less than two minutes later, just 10 seconds after getting a late power play themselves. Paige Hubbard fired a shot over Oswald's blocker from the right faceoff dot, giving the third-year forward her fifth goal of the campaign.
  • Overtime lasted just 45 seconds. Alberta took advantage of a turnover at Regina's blueline and Natalie Kieser converted on a breakaway to send the Pandas home with a weekend sweep.

NOTES
  • Kliewer stopped 29 of Alberta's 31 shots.
  • Shaylee Scraba was credited with her fourth assist of the year on Hubbard's goal.
  • Alberta was 1-for-5 on the power play while the Cougars finished 1-for-2.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars have four games remaining on the Canada West schedule, starting next weekend with games at Saskatchewan on Saturday and Sunday. They'll finish off the 2022-23 season at home against UBC on Feb. 10 and Feb. 11.
