Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars start quick, but suffer road loss to Saskatchewan

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's hockey team got out to a hot start, but ended up on the losing end of a 7-2 score to Saskatchewan on Friday night in Saskatoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars opened the scoring just over a minute into the game on a bit of a strange one as Jake Fletcher scored on a quick shot from a sharp angle.
  • Jayden Davis extended Regina's lead to 2-0 after deflecting a Matt Culling shot on the power play eight minutes in.
  • Justin Ball added a goal for Saskatchewan five minutes later, cutting Regina's lead to 2-1 at the first intermission.
  • Goals by Chantz Petruic and Connor Hobbs just 2:39 apart early in the second put Saskatchewan into the lead for good, and Petruic added another to give the Huskies a 4-2 lead through 40.
  • Alec Zawatsky put the game away with a goal midway through the third, and Vince Loschiavo and Rhett Rhinehart tacked on late goals in the final two minutes.

NOTES
  • The Cougars (8-15-2) remain in sixth place in the Canada West standings thanks to losses by both MacEwan and Manitoba on Friday night.
  • Tyler Heidt also assisted on Davis' goal, giving the fifth-year veteran 18 assists on the season.

NEXT UP
  • The two teams will play the return leg of the home-and-home on Saturday night in Regina. Puck drop is set for 7:00 PM at The Co-operators Centre.
