Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Belmore leads Cougars to win, sweep over Lethbridge

QUICKLY
  • Jade Belmore's career-high 33 points helped the No. 2-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team outlast Lethbridge for a 77-72 win on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams played an entertaining, tightly fought contest which at no point was more than a two-possession game for either side.
  • Lethbridge led 21-19 after the first quarter and 37-35 at the break, and the two teams went into the final period all tied up at 66-66.
  • Jessica Haenni's bucket with just over three minutes to go put the Pronghorns up by four at 72-68, but that would be Lethbridge's final points of the game. Regina closed the game on a 9-0 run including a Zoe Hartmann bucket and then seven consecutive points by Belmore. Belmore's mid-range jumper with just under a minute to go put Regina on top and she hit three more free throws in the dying seconds to seal the win.

NOTES
  • Belmore's 33-point outburst breaks her previous career high of 28, which she originally set last year and tied it on two more occasions this season.
  • Cara Misskey added 14 points and 7 assists for the Cougars, while Dayna Pearce chipped in with a 13-point performance.
  • Haily Weaver had 30 points and 11 rebounds for Lethbridge, which falls to 5-11 with the setback.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars (14-2) are now riding a five-game winning streak and will be right back home again next weekend. They'll host Calgary on Friday and Saturday at the CKHS.
