Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars erupt for 8-0 win at Manitoba

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's hockey team erupted for an 8-0 road win over Manitoba on Friday night in Winnipeg.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jayden Davis knocked in a rebound to open the scoring 12 minutes in, then Jake Fletcher sent the water bottle flying with a hard shot from the left circle that gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes.
  • Randen Schmidt scored just 14 seconds into the middle frame after taking a pass from Eric Houk following a Manitoba clearance attempt that took a fortuitous bounce off one of the linesmen.
  • Eric Pearce scored 12 minutes into the second, with his first goal as a Cougar sending starting Manitoba netminder Ross Hawryluk to the bench in favour of backup Simon Harkness.
  • Griffin Asham-Moroz added another goal shortly after Pearce's marker to put the Cougars up 5-0, and Jackson Doucet, Brennan Riddle, and Davis all scored in the third to complete the rout.
  • Adam Evanoff got the start and stopped all 25 Manitoba shots, but doesn't officially get credit for a shutout as he briefly exited the game in the third period while getting his left skate fixed.

NOTES
  • Friday's win marked the largest shutout victory ever for the Cougars in a Canada West game and their largest shutout victory in a conference game since defeating Lakehead by a 10-0 score on Feb. 24, 1984 in a Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup at the Al Ritchie Arena.
  • Asham-Moroz also had two assists to notch his first three-point game as a Cougar while Davis, Schmidt, Austin King-Cunningham, Tyler Heidt, Eric Houk, and Riley Krane all had two points.

NEXT UP
  • Now just four points back of Manitoba for the sixth and final Canada West playoff spot, the Cougars (4-11-2) will go for the weekend sweep over Manitoba on Saturday afternoon (3:00 PM).
