Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars pull off epic comeback with 3-2 shootout win over Manitoba

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's hockey team trailed by two goals with a minute left in regulation, but pulled off an epic comeback which resulted in a 3-2 shootout win over Manitoba on Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saturday's game in no way resembled Regina's 8-0 blowout win on Friday. The two teams went scoreless for the game's opening 48 minutes until Manitoba's Hayden Ostir finally broke the goose egg in the third period.
  • Ostir looked to have sealed the win for Manitoba after making it 2-0 with just 1:27 left in regulation, but the Cougars had other ideas.
  • Eric Houk deflected a Riley Krane shot from the slot to get the Cougars on the board with goalie Adam Evanoff pulled and 58 seconds left on the clock.
  • The Cougars got the equalizer with just 15 seconds to go. Matt Culling fired a shot from near the left faceoff dot that was saved, but Jake Fletcher poked in the rebound to send the game into overtime.
  • After two five-minute overtime sessions, the game needed a shootout to decide. And the Cougars needed a comeback there as well. Manitoba led 1-0 after the opening round, but Evanoff stopped the next two Manitoba attempts and the Cougars got goals from Jackson Doucet and Eric Houk to come away with the win.

QUOTABLE
  • "We expected a way different game than last night, and it was. I'm proud of the way we battled today. The guys didn't give up even when they were down two and we had a lot of firsts this weekend. I thought Evanoff was solid all weekend. He made some key saves last night when it was still close and tonight he gave us a chance to win." - Cougars head coach Todd Johnson

NOTES
  • The Cougars (5-11-2) started the weekend six points back of Manitoba for the sixth and final Canada West playoff berth, but now sit just three points back of the Bisons after this weekend's two wins.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars are back at home for a huge two-game weekend series against MacEwan. Regina's win today pulled the Cougars level with MacEwan in the Canada West standings, and the two teams will clash on Friday night (7:00) and Saturday afternoon (3:00) at The Co-operators Centre.
