Cougars stay alive in playoff race after highest-scoring draw in team history

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's soccer team stayed alive in the Prairie Division playoff race after a wild 4-4 draw with Manitoba on Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams combined for three goals in the opening 14 minutes of the contest and somehow, that was tame compared to what would come later in the match.
  • Manitoba opened the scoring with Janelle Chomini's first of the season in the sixth minute, only to have Allyson Schneider level the score just seven minutes later on a shot from distance that evaded Bisons goalkeeper Karina Bagi.
  • The Bisons reclaimed the lead just a minute later on a Jessica Tsai penalty kick, and the score stayed 2-1 for Manitoba through halftime and well into the second half.
  • And then, Schneider took a pass from Peyton Enns in tight in the 80th minute and scored, kickstarting one of the wildest 10-minute stretches ever seen in Canada West soccer.
  • The craziness continued as Manitoba's Chomini and Paris Sidhu scored in the 83rd and 84th minute, respectively, to put the Bisons up 4-2.
  • But the Cougars were able to pull off the miracle comeback to keep their season alive. First, Kirsten Koellmel knocked home a rebound in the 85th minute to draw the visitors to within one. And then early in injury time, Nicole Klassen sent in Gemma Gaucher on a breakaway and the third-year player placed her first career Canada West goal neatly in the top right corner to level the score at 4-4.

STANDINGS
The incredible conclusion to Saturday's match saved the season for the Cougars. Manitoba would have clinched the final Prairie Division playoff berth with a win, but instead the Bisons go into the final day of the regular season with just a one-point edge over Regina in the standings. The Cougars will need to make up that point on Sunday as the Cougars take on Winnipeg and Manitoba hosts Saskatchewan. Regina would hold the tiebreaker over Manitoba if the two teams finish tied in points.

NOTES
  • Saturday's game goes into the books as the highest-scoring draw in University of Regina history. The Cougars had twice played to 3-3 draws, both of which happened during the 2002 season back when current head coach Astrid Baecker was in her second year as a player with the team.
  • The combined eight goals were the most in a game involving the Cougars since Oct. 18, 2009.

NEXT UP
The Cougars finish off the Canada West schedule on Sunday on the road against Winnipeg. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM (CDT).
