Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Kliewer records 34-save shutout as Cougars beat No. 9 Saskatchewan 2-0

QUICKLY
Arden Kliewer stopped all 34 shots she faced as the University of Regina's women's hockey team took a 2-0 shutout victory over No. 9-ranked Saskatchewan on Saturday in Saskatoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars opened the scoring late in the first period when Shaylee Scraba's initial shot from the right circle was saved, but Kaitlyn Gilroy pounced on the rebound for her first of the season.
  • Kliewer was at her best in the second period. The Huskies outshot Regina 15-7 in the middle stanza, but the third-year goaltender turned aside all of them to keep the Cougars up 1-0 through 40 minutes.
  • The Cougars took three consecutive minor penalties in the third period but instead it was Regina extending the lead shorthanded. Lauren Focht took advantage of a Huskies turnover in their own zone and rifled a shot from the left faceoff dot to the far top corner.
  • Saskatchewan pulled goalie Colby Wilson for an extra attacker with nearly two and a half minutes remaining, but weren't able to beat Kliewer.

NOTES
  • Scraba's assist was her team-leading fourth helper of the season.
  • Shelby Rublee collected her first Canada West point as she got the puck up to Scraba on Gilroy's goal.
  • Kliewer's shutout was the third of her career. Her 34 saves were the most she's had in a shutout at the U SPORTS level.

NEXT UP
The Cougars will now prepare for two consecutive road weekends, beginning next weekend against a Calgary team that they currently sit just one point back of in the Canada West standings. They'll play the Dinos on Friday night (7:00) and Saturday afternoon (2:00) before returning to Regina.
