Rams finish season with setback to Saskatchewan

QUICKLY
The University of Regina Rams ended the 2023 campaign with a 43-11 loss to Saskatchewan on Saturday afternoon in a U-Prairie Challenge game at Mosaic Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saskatchewan opened the scoring with an 18-yard field goal on its second drive. The Rams got a single point off a missed field goal, then took what would be their only lead of the game on an Andrew Sweeney field goal which bounced off the right upright and squeaked through to put the Rams up 4-3 early in the second quarter.
  • But Saskatchewan scored touchdowns on their next two possessions to take the lead for good. Ryker Frank got both of them, punching it in from one yard out and then rumbling 40 yards for a major to put the Huskies up 17-4 at halftime.
  • The Huskies extended the lead to 24-4 after a reverse brought them into the end zone and Anton Amundrud ran it in himself from eight yards out. The Rams got some life after a Chopper Hippe interception set up an 8-play, 40-yard drive which was capped by a brilliant one-handed catch by Rylan Sokul as he hauled in an Owen Sieben pass from seven yards out.
  • Saskatchewan scored 19 unanswered points in the final quarter to seal the win.

RAMS NOTES
NEXT UP
Saskatchewan finishes the season at 5-3, but will end up in third place in the Canada West standings as they also needed a UBC loss to Alberta to secure a home playoff game. Instead, Saskatchewan will head to Alberta for a semifinal next weekend and UBC will host Manitoba.
