UBC rolls to big win in Friday opener in Regina

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's hockey team ended up on the wrong side of an 8-1 score on Friday night as UBC took a road win over the Cougars at The Co-operators Centre in Regina.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Jake Lee opened the scoring for UBC in the first period, the Thunderbirds exploded for three goals in just 41 seconds later in the frame. Jonathan Smart scored on the power play at 16:49, Jake Kryski added another at 17:11, and Sam Huo struck at 17:30 to give the Thunderbirds a commanding 4-0 lead through 20 minutes.
  • Sasha Mutala scored for UBC early in the second before Regina finally got on the board with Eric Houk's second of the season with just under seven minutes to go in the middle stanza. But UBC quickly restored the five-goal lead with Huo's second of the night, and Matthew Smith added another as UBC went into the second intermission up 7-1.
  • Huo completed the hat trick with an impressive individual effort on an end-to-end rush with UBC on the power play early in the third.

NOTES
  • Matt Culling and Jayden Davis both assisted on Houk's goal.
  • Adam Evanoff got the start in net for the Cougars before giving way to Curtis Meger just past the four-minute mark of the second period.
  • Both teams were given six power play opportunities. UBC was 2-for-6 with the man advantage while Regina was 0-for-6.
