QUICKLY
Veteran goaltender
Curtis Meger had a herculean 53-save performance for the University of Regina's men's hockey team on Saturday night, but the Cougars couldn't hang on to a three-goal lead and lost 5-4 to UBC in a shootout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Saturday's game saw the Cougars jump out to a quick 2-0 lead thanks to a Griffin Asham-Moroz deflection and a Paycen Bjorklund breakaway goal that was set up by a beautiful Randen Schmidt pass. Meger himself drew the second assist on Bjorklund's goal.
- The Cougars got into penalty trouble at the end of the first and UBC got on the board thanks to a Liam Kindree power play goal late in the period.
- Regina scored two goals in a span of 1:40 in the second period. Eric Houk notched his third of the season, then Schmidt scored to give the Cougars a 4-1 lead eight minutes into the middle frame.
- UBC got some life late in the second after taking advantage of a miscue on Regina's lone power play attempt of the game. Chris Douglas took possession in the neutral zone and scored on a breakaway to cut the Regina lead to two heading into the second intermission.
- The Thunderbirds then scored twice late in the third to tie it up. Sam Huo got UBC closer with just under five minutes to go, then Kindree wired a shot from the left point to tie it up with UBC goalie Cole Schwebius pulled for an extra attacker and just 1:30 remaining in the game.
- After overtime solved nothing, Schwebius stopped all three Regina attempts in the shootout. Kindree's opening-round goal stood as the winner, sending UBC home with the win and the weekend sweep.
NOTES
- Meger's 53 saves were the most recorded by a U of R goalie since Dawson MacAuley had 54 saves at Alberta on Nov. 10, 2018. The school single-game record is held by Craig Lumbard, who had 62 saves in a 6-4 win over Lethbridge on Nov. 18, 1995.
- Matt Culling assisted on the goals by Asham-Moroz and Houk, giving him four assists in four games to start the season.
- Asham-Moroz and Schmidt both had two-point nights.
- Regina moves to 0-2-2 with the result.
NEXT UP
