Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Women's hockey falls to UBC in Vancouver

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's hockey team dropped a 6-1 decision to UBC on Friday night at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UBC got a goal in the first period from Mackenzie Kordic and another in the second from Rylind MacKinnon, but it was two goals in the span of 55 seconds early in the third that essentially sealed the win for the home squad. Mia Bierd scored at the five-minute mark of the final period, then Madisyn Wiebe pushed the lead to four with a goal just under a minute later.
  • Regina got its lone goal on a 5-on-3 power play when Jenna Merk made a nice play to draw a UBC defender to her and slipped a pass over to Makena Kushniruk, who put it to her backhand and notched her second of the young campaign.
  • UBC capped the scoring with Kordic's second of the game and one last one from Kailee Peppler.

NOTES
  • Natalie Williamson got the start for the Cougars (0-2-1) and finished with 31 saves.
  • The Cougars were 1-for-3 on the power play while their penalty kill held UBC scoreless on its four opportunities.

NEXT UP
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series on Saturday afternoon in Vancouver. Game time is set for 3:00 PM (PDT).
